“Finally, we’re home!” Mikey yelled from the spot beside me bouncing up and down in his seat waking me from my nap. I sat up groggily to see my new home out the window of the car we were sitting in. Looking up at my new house, my jaw dropped. It was beautiful, all stone two story house, pebble walkway leading to the hard wood front door. It had a fence built around the back and the grass was green and it looked like it was freshly cut. I couldn’t wait to see the rest of the house, and apparently Mikey couldn’t either because as soon as Mr. Way put the car in park he was out the door, running to my side of the car, yanking the door open and pulling me out by the forearm.
“Mikey, slow down! You’re going to pull his arm out of socket!” Mrs. Way yelled getting out of the car as Mr. Way popped the trunk open to grab my suitcase out.
“Sorry Ma! I’m just so excited to show Frank the house!” he screamed back slowing his pace slightly and letting go of my arm. I laughed at his frustration as he went to open the door only to find out that it was locked. “Ma! You locked the door!” he whined impatiently stomping his foot like a child who was told they couldn’t have the cookie before dinner.
“Oh, sorry honey! We’ll be there in a second. Frank isn’t going anywhere!” she answered him walking up the sidewalk. Mikey crossed his arms and pouted as his mom finally came up the front porch to the door.
“Finally, I thought I was going to have to carry you!” he yelled exasperated, as she pulled her keys out of her purse and pushed it into the keyhole.
“I don’t think you could carry her Mikey, you’re too skinny,” I told him punching him lightly on the arm.
“I so could carry her!” Mikey said disagreeing with me.
“I don’t think you could,” I shot back at him grinning walking past him and into the house. I stopped once I walked in. It was huge, looking to my right I saw the living room, with a nice big fireplace, a couch, loveseat and two chairs sitting in front of large screen television screen. There was a case next to the TV that held movies and video games in it. I had a feeling that I was going to love it here.
“Yeah I could!” he yelled running in behind me. Mrs. Way just laughed and shook her head at our little fight. Once Mikey had caught up with me; he grabbed my arm pulled me towards the staircase. “I’m going to go show him his room now Ma!” he screamed halfway up the stairs.
“Okay, be down in an hour for dinner!” she replied from the bottom of the staircase, as Mikey yanked me down the hallway.
“This is your room,” he said excitedly pushing the door we stopped in front of open. We stepped inside the room and my grin got huge. It was painted black and red, my favorite colors, it had a queen sized bed in the fair right hand corner of the room, and a wide screen TV across the room from the bed sitting on a nice entertainment center filled with games and movies. On the other side of the room was a walk-in closet, the door to the bathroom and a computer desk with a brand new computer sitting on the desk top.
“Do you like it?” Mikey asked walking in the room with me.
“I love it!” I exclaimed pulling him into a bear hug. “Thank you so much Mikey, you’re the awesomest brother ever!” I squealed happily. He laughs and hugs me back.
“Thank you, I’m glad you like it!” he said pulling away, grabbing my arm and pulling me back out into the hallway. “Let’s go see my room!” he screamed ecstatically.
*
An hour later Mikey had shown me his room, the kitchen, dining room, living room, Gerard’s old room, about three bathrooms, the back yard that had an in ground pool and a hot tub. I really love this place. I feel so at home here. When he was done giving me the grand tour, he pulled me back upstairs to unpack all my stuff and get me moved into my room. Then when we were done with that, we went into Mikey’s room and played Guitar Hero until Mrs. Way called us down for dinner. She cooked lasagna, vegetarian lasagna for me with garlic bread. My first home cooked meal since I was ten, and it was delicious.
“Thank you so much Mrs. Way for dinner. It was really good,” I said stuffed. I had eaten two and a half helpings of my vegetarian lasagna and at least four pieces of garlic bread.
“You’re very welcome Frank,” she said picking up our plates and brining them into the kitchen.
“Would you like some help Mrs. Way?” I asked sliding out of my chair and grabbing the food dishes of the table.
“Why thank you Frank, and please call me Donna,” she said putting the leftovers in plastic wear and putting them in the refrigerator.
“It is no problem Donna,” I reassured her putting the dirty dishes in the sink. After I helped her clean the table Mikey came barreling in the kitchen excitedly.
“Come on Frank, The Nightmare before Christmas is on!” he exclaimed happily grabbing my arm and pulling me into the living room. He knew that The Nightmare before Christmas was my favorite movie. I’m so glad that he came and got me, that movie never gets old.
“Thanks Frank!” Mrs. Way yelled from the kitchen as we sat down on the couch in the living room.
“You’re Welcome!” I screamed back to her. I noticed that there is quite a lot of yelling going on in this household, but it feels just like home. It shows that they're alive.
About two hours later we were all sitting in front of the TV watching Family Feud, yelling out answers to the television screen and screeching out insults to the families that were playing. I was having a blast; I felt like this is where I belonged, that this was truly my family. I was so happy that I finally got adopted into this perfect family.
“Well, I’m tired. Goodnight boys,” Mr. and Mrs. Way said standing up and walking over to us. They both gave us hugs and kisses on the cheeks before heading off to bed. But before they walked up the stairs Mrs. Way turned around and said, “Welcome Home Frankie.”
*
“Frank! Frankie get up! It’s time for school!” Mikey screams pouncing on my bed and poking me on the head. I groan and roll over away from his poking assault. I’ve been living with the Way’s for two weeks and honestly this is the happiest I’ve ever been. Donald and Donna are wonderful parents and Mikey is quite a character, but I love them all as my family. We went bowling two nights ago as a part of family night and I got creamed by Donald. Mikey wasn’t a happy camper coming in second though. They thought he might go manic because he lost, but I brought back ice cream just in time. So, last week Donna told me what to do if Mikey ever goes manic while they’re not home or just not around in case something like that ever happens.
Then yesterday we went school shopping, I finally get to go to a public school. Mikey and I were so excited we stayed up until three o’clock in the morning before we went to sleep, and we had to get up at six. Mikey didn’t have any trouble waking up since he barely gets any sleep, but I need my regulation eight hours of sleep.
“Frank Anthony Thomas Iero Junior, get your fat ass up!” Mikey yells pulling my blankets away from my body. I groan again and roll into a fetal position refusing to get up. “Frank!” he bellows annoyed throwing his arms in the air exasperatedly.
“Fine,” I huff defeated, rolling of my bed, stretching my arms above my head and ruffling my slightly greasy brown hair around.
“Finally, I thought I was going to have to bring in a bucket of cold water to wake you up,” he says shaking his dark brown hair making his white glasses slip down to the edge of his nose.
I look at him shocked, “Damn man, that’s harsh,” I said walking into the bathroom, grabbing a towel off my computer chair as I go. He laughs and walks out of the room. “And for the record, I do not have a fat ass!” I yell to him, turning on the warm water for my shower. I hear him burst out laughing and scream something back at me, but the walls muffled his voice. “I can’t hear you Mikey!” I say in a sing-song voice, stripping off my boxers and t-shirt and stepping into the shower.
After my shower I walk out with a towel wrapped tightly around my waist, saunter into my closet and pull out my favorite pair of black skinny jeans, a pair of batman boxers and a faded red Black Flag band t-shirt. Walking back out of my closet I set them on my bed and start putting my clothes on, humming a random tune. When I finish getting dressed I walk back into the bathroom, turn on my straighter and towel dry my hair while I wait for it to heat up. Upon hearing the quiet ding from the hot iron I comb my hair with my fingers and start straightening random pieces of my hair. After I do that, I grabbed some hair gel and spiked the back of my head a bit and put on a thin layer of eyeliner.
“Perfect,” I mumble ruffling my hair a little to get that slight bed head look.
“Frank breakfast’s ready!” Donna yells from the kitchen. I quickly run out of the bathroom, throw on some unmatched socks, my worn out vans and grab my bag off my desk.
“I’m coming!” I holler down to her, barreling out of my room and towards the staircase.
Mikey and I finish breakfast around the same time and put our dishes in the sink before we leave for school. “Have a good day boys, and please don’t cause any trouble on your first day!” Donna yells cleaning the dirty breakfast dishes.
“We can’t promise that Ma!” Mikey screams back, snickering as we walk out the front door and start our journey towards Belleville High School home of the Buccaneers.
The walk to the school wasn’t bad, Mikey and I talked and I learned more about the school. Like whom to stay away from for instance; the cheerleader and the jocks. He told me that the cheerleaders will give me trouble because, in his exact words, I was one sexy beast, and the jocks will beat me up because I’m gay. So I need to be careful about who knows and who doesn’t know about my sexuality. He also told me he had this crush on a band girl named Alicia, but he told me she doesn’t even know he exists. That’s when he started getting depressed, so I asked him about his brother, Gerard.
Big mistake, he started talking about all the way to the school. He loves his brother very much, and he went manic when he left. He felt as if Gerard didn’t love him anymore and he started cutting. That’s when the Way parents decided to adopt me. And I’m very glad they did.
